I was intrigued by these photos most when researching Phelps book Higley because they both use natural lighting beautifully. I prefer to take advantage of natural lighting because I think you can appreciate a photograph more when you realise that a photo can look like that unedited. The composition of the photograph is also something I admire about Phelp's work as well, sometimes cropping a photo the wrong way can make the picture look uneven or unfinished but his photos are composed in an aesthetic way. His photos are also really peaceful, they look like they've been taken at sunrise and dusk both of which are times during the day when neighbourhood's become quiet and you can relax.

diptychs & triptychs
When making these diptychs and triptychs, I realised that matching photographs together is a harder process then I thought. Adding two pictures together and then changing or adding one has the power to completely differentiate the meaning from the last.
favourite triptych
the images on the sides work to frame the photo in the middle because they're similar, the focus is drawn to the bottom of the photo because its darker and has more detail than the top of the photo. The one in the middle stands out because the subject matter is different
photos can have a different subject matter and tone variation but can be connected by meaning
Linear aspect of the images
The lines drawn on the images demonstrate one way I made the decision to order them how I did. The two images on the side are connected because the photo is separated into light and dark directly through the middle. This quality in the photos was accidental but it made it easy to decide to group them together. The line diagonally through the photos was drawn because when I view the photo my attention is drawn to the top of the photo because the brightness stands out, and then I look to the middle which is when the tone variation starts to become darker and then the bottom of the photo is the part that is the darkest.

hidden meaning behind both that need to be explained in an additional way
Trying to match tones in photos and locations that are both similar (landmarks) to show how places my family and I have been to are connected even though they are in very different places
places that have memories
linear aspect to both because of the bridges
there's more depth in both photos because the bridges are the main focal point but they're in the background rather then the foreground
One exhibition that I really enjoyed was the short film which was projected in a room decorated like Adeyemi Micheal's living room. The short film is accompanied by a voice over of his mother talking about her experience as a first generation immigrant. She describes the feeling of the experience as "triumphant, celebratory and victorious".
The combination of physical and digital art made it more intriguing because of how much there was to look at
The exhibition was different to ones I've been to before because most exhibitions don't explore the fact that photography doesn't have to be static and that videography is an effective way to create work
The video of the first short film exhibit was much easier to focus on then the second, it was in a room by itself so you had nothing to focus on but the video, the second one however had other visual elements to the piece which made it difficult to focus on just the video because of wanting to look at everything else
The first video installation helped influence me because the transitions between each of the videos was really smooth which made it more enjoyable to watch. Each video was also the right length of time meaning that I didn't get bored while watching it, it made me consider patterns that I could use when making a video installation to slightly vary the length of each video so that it remains captivating for audiences
Demonstrates how photography is a form of expression and can have varied meanings and impacts
Relatable exhibition for people who have family members who are also first generation immigrants which would make people in society feel included knowing that artists that represent their history are being given the opportunity to share their work and by extension their life experiences
NYC in LDN
This was an advertisement for a new flat build in Canary Wharf. It was made to look like Manhattan in New York which related to my project because my uncle lives in New York and I went when I was younger while he was living there. My project is about finding places that are a home away from home when I'm not in America. Even though this was something temporary it was very special to go and walk around with him and almost be able to pretend that for a short while I was back in America with him and my mum. I chose to frame the photos so that I didn't get any noticeable buildings that looked like it was canary wharf so enhance the illusion that it was New York.

Lightroom experimentation
These photos were taken on a digital camera so I wanted to experiment with making them look vintage. I edited them on Adobe Lightroom to give them a warmer tone creating the visual effect of a film camera. Having time stamps on the photographs from a film camera reinforces the idea that time is a visual concept in photography and photos are documentations of a moment in time that will never be the same. I plan to explore this idea further through multi media experiments

'He's constructed his own universe through his photography'
I like the interactive element to the book
the way the photographs have been matched together is very interesting, there are links to them through composition and subject matter but the meanings will be completely different
Reminiscent
nostalgia
black and white connects the photographs even though a lot might have changed between when they were taken
No spaces between the photos makes you look through it like a story and it blurs the differences between the photos
experimentation
I have started to experiment with making a book, I cut the images so that they would be a different length and I then used the pieces of the images that I cut and stuck it onto the back of other photos or next to them in the book. When making this I was inspired by Paulina Korobkiewicz's book 'Perspective'.

Here I was experimenting with using the printer to photocopy my photos on top of each other and copy the images in different colours. With the warm tone variation of my photos the colours that worked best were navy and orange, next I am going to make a book with the images the same way.

Research on Thamesmead
"In the Thamsemead area of London, a sinister looking housing estate surrounds an artificial lake that is forever associated with its appearance in Stanley Kubrick's dark sci-fi masterpiece. A Clockwork Orange"
Archive Footage:
Plan: Go to Thamesmead and walk around the area where I used to live and take videos. Go to where the Abbey Wood estate was and recreate archive footage from the videos. Use Let it Happen by Tame Impala
Let it Happen Analysis
The camera shots enhances the anxieties felt by the man about getting on the flight
The monotonous colour palette in the airport juxtaposes the calming soft colours outside the airport. This could insinuate that everyone has their own fears and anxieties but to relinquish them, you have realise that you can't control everything and you need to stop yourself imagining the worst case scenario
The chairs and big windows combined with the man's own anxieties trap him from feeling the freedom of the outside world
The meaning behind the video is that you will never be able to feel true freedom and happiness unless we relent on the pressures and anxiety that we feel. The director cleverly encapsulates these emotions by using low-key lighting and close ups to make the actors emotions more prominent
This song relates to my personal investigation because its about feeling apprehensive of change and not wanting to accept that places you feel connected to can't stay the same
I plan to make a documentary video with archive footage of how Thamesmead used to look like when it was orginally built in the 1970s to how it is now
6 week plan: week 1: make test books + finis final outcome film and explain how I have narrowed down the location and meaning for the investigation week 2: film in thamesmead week 3:make another book week4: work on personal investigation essay week5: personal investigation essay + finalising video week 6: finalise and print off essay, make sure video is exported and uploaded to vimeo
